Releasing the sculpture

Michelangelo: Sonnet 151, c. 1538 – 44

Non ha l’ ottimo artista alcun concetto
che un marmo solo in sé non circonscriva
col suo soverchio; e solo a quello arriva
la man che obbedisce all’ intelletto.

Not even the best of artists has any conception
that a single marble block does not contain
within its excess, and that is only attained
by the hand that obeys the intellect.

  • Michelangelo worked under the premise that the images of his statues were already in the block of stone he was working on and it was his work that released them
Atlas – unfinished – in creation
  • Contemporary bodybuilders talk of ‘sculpting’ their own bodies
